The following factsheets were prepared in light of the side event "No Time to Waste: Tackling Submerged Munitions in European Seas" co-organised by GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, The Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission (HELCOM), the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN), and the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR).

The Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining’s 2025 publication provides an overview of global underwater explosive ordnance (EO) contamination, outlining impacts, management approaches, and key challenges, and serving as a foundational knowledge base for mine action and maritime security.
Commissioned by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA), a 2021 study by ICF Consulting Services Ltd. and Ventura Associates provides an EU-wide assessment of underwater unexploded munitions, highlighting coordination challenges, existing capabilities, and best practices to support improved maritime security and protection of the marine environment.
