What is the Munitions in the Sea community?
The Munitions in the Sea community is an evolving network whose core consists of consortium partners from ongoing research projects in Europe addressing the various aspects of munitions in the sea. While these projects are independently planned , participating institutions collaborate closely to enhance efficiency, facilitate knowledge exchange and reduce stakeholder fatigue. This cooperation includes
- joint cruises, with shared ship time, technological assets and results;
- the establishment of inter-project working groups, shared online platforms and jointly managed social media channels;
- and the organisation of joint stakeholder activities such as surveys and workshops.
In addition, project partners promote mutual visibility by referencing other ongoing initiatives when presenting their work at events, helping external stakeholders understand the broader, collective effort.
To further build on the legacy of the JPI Oceans Joint Action Munition in the Sea, which ended in 2024, and to ensure coordination, particularly regarding communication and outreach, JPI Oceans, being involved in the two EU-funded projects MMinE-SwEEPER and CAMMera, established and now coordinates a bi-monthly exchange among the representatives from the communication work packages of the various projects. Since spring 2025, this exchange has enabled participants to share updates on outreach activities and coordinate joint contributions to events. The group also manages the shared LinkedIn channel “Munitions in the Sea” and has produced the booklet Removal of wrecks and munitions from European seas.
