About

The JPI Oceans Knowledge Portal on Munitions in the Sea (JPI Oceans Munitions Portal) serves as the primary hub for information on the issue of munitions in the sea across Europe. It addresses the challenge of fragmented and lost research data, offering a comprehensive overview of ongoing studies, key stakeholders, and current projects and initiatives. As a decision-support tool, the portal provides detailed insights into Mapping and Identification, Risk Assessment, and Remediation Approaches.

Coordinated by JPI Oceans, hosted by the Fraunhofer ICT, and authored by leading experts in the field, the Munitions Portal aims to strengthen collective efforts towards a future where this corroding underwater threat is no longer a concern.

The portal is a key outcome of the JPI Oceans Joint Action on Munitions in the Sea, which concluded in 2024. Over several years, experts collaborated within a Knowledge Hub, developing strategies to address this pressing environmental and security issue. The Knowledge Hub was the key catalyst for the establishment of the website, providing a structured framework for consolidating research and expertise. The first outlook of the website was drafted during the Kiel Munition Clearance Week 2021, where experts convened to define its initial structure and objectives.

The JPI Oceans Munitions Portal was officially launched at the European Maritime Day 2024 in Svendborg, Denmark, marking a significant milestone in the collective effort to mitigate the risks posed by legacy munitions. Its ongoing development is currently supported in part by the MMinE-SwEEPER project, ensuring that the portal continues to evolve as a vital resource for policymakers, researchers, and environmental protection agencies.
