Regional coordination plays a central role in addressing the issue of munitions in the sea. Across Europe, regional sea conventions and other regional cooperation frameworks provide important mechanisms for aligning national efforts and facilitating the exchange of information among coastal states. These platforms enable joint assessment, data sharing and policy development, supporting a coherent regional response to the challenges posed by underwater munitions.
In the Baltic Sea, regional collaboration is particularly well developed. The work carried out under the Helsinki Commission (HELCOM) is often referred to as an advanced example of structured and sustained cooperation in this field, offering valuable experience for similar efforts in other regions.
At the same time, all regional sea conventions and related cooperation frameworks, such as those covering the North-East Atlantic, the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, are increasingly strengthening their links with European and national research projects. This growing interaction between policy coordination and scientific work supports evidence-based decision-making and contributes to a more unified and effective regional approach to dealing with the legacy of underwater munitions.
Below are the major regional organisations covering the different European sea basins.
